Understanding the potential benefits to mental health and wellbeing that immersion in the natural environment and community connections can foster, Kyrie Farm in Kildare aims to launch a therapeutic support centre for adults facing mental health challenges as they move towards recovery, wellbeing, and independent living.
Drawing inspiration from Gould Farm in Massachusetts and Hopewell Farm in Ohio, the model combines clinical care, community living, and structured, meaningful work in a unique healing environment. Proven results from other therapeutic farms demonstrate a marked reduction in negative symptoms, improved social engagement, increased independent living, and higher employment rates amongst former guests.
The centre is the vision of John and Vicky McKeon, who suffered the loss of their eldest son Kieran to suicide in 2013. Kieran passed away at the age of 18, having struggled with fatigue and depression after contracting a debilitating virus at age 12. Their dedication to supporting others has driven the establishment of this pioneering project.
Collaborating with the psychology department at Maynooth University, Kyrie Farm will offer an innovative approach to therapeutic support, aiming to rebuild hope, healing, and meaning in the lives of its guests. Clinical care, holistic therapy, and peer support for a wide range of mental health conditions will be provided, with residents staying for a duration of between 3 and 6 months. Situated on 57 acres, Kyrie Farm will cater for up to 40 guests and operate at the level of a residential community rehabilitation facility within the HSE framework, acting as a bridge between inpatient facilities and independent living.
Kyrie Farm is a registered charity operating under a Board of Directors and with a large team of professionals specialising in areas from finance to psychiatry. Project development is well underway, with full planning permission now secured and the project officially “shovel ready.” The capital cost for the facilities is estimated at €30 million, and Kyrie Farm is expected to launch in 2027.
